Nantucket is a wonderful place to learn about history and nature. See how people lived during the whaling era or spend an afternoon visiting the Oldest House or take the kids to the top of Old North Church for a breathtaking view of town. Stroll along cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks.  Watch sunrise from the wharf or sunset from the beach.   There are many activities and places to visit - something for everyone!  Take a live web cam view of a few locations around town (courtesy of nantucket.net's webcam).

Here are a few historical places of interest you can visit while here:

  • Oldest House
Off Sunset Lane.  Built in 1686 by families of the first settlers who arrived in 1659 to raise sheep and farm.  Wonderful collection of original furnishings.  Notice the "U" on the chimney to ward witches away!

  • Whaling Museum
Broad Street.  Whaling brought wealth and prosperity to Nantucket back in the early 1800's.  Wonderful paintings of whaling families, artifacts and a whale's skeleton among the items found here.

  • The Hadwen House
96 Main Street.  Built for a wealthy whaling tycoon, this greek revival mansion and beautiful gardens capture the romance and elegance of a day gone by.

  • The Old Mill
Prospect & S. Mill Street.  Built in 1746 it is the only survivor of four original windmills used to grind corn.  Still active, you can tour the inside and watch the vanes in the wind from the outside.
  • The 1800 House - 4 Mill Street
  • Fair Street Museum & Quaker Meeting House - Fair Street
  • The Hinchman House - 7 Milk Street
  • Maria Mitchell Observatory - 3 Vestal Street
  • Old Gaol - 15 Vestal Street
  • Quaker Cemetery - Madaket & Quaker Road
  • Sankaty Lighthouse - Siasconset
  • The Three Bricks - Main Street

The Easton House can provide you with local street maps and guide books upon arrival.
